Capital Ballet is a non-professional company of adult dancers who seek to train and perform in a professional setting. Capital Ballet comprises dancers of diverse background and experience. A reflection of the diversity of DC, the company includes area natives as well as those who have come to the nation’s capital from across the country and around the world.
Capital Ballet is an active participant in DC’s artistic community, rehearsing at local studios and commissioning works from local choreographers. The company aims for artistic integrity in its programming, which includes a mix of styles centered on classical and contemporary ballet.
Capital Ballet’s season runs from September to March, culminating in an annual program of new and original works as well as excerpts from classical ballets. Auditions for the upcoming season are held in late summer.
Under the guidance of Artistic Advisor Suzanne Kritzberg, management and leadership of the company is undertaken by the dancers themselves. The collaborative environment enables dancers to choose how best to contribute their time and skills to the full range of behind-the-scenes efforts needed to support the company each season.
While the company is primarily supported by fundraising and ticket revenue, dancers currently contribute to studio rentals and teacher costs. The company strives to keep class costs as low as possible, equating to less than a third of comparable open class rates. Rehearsal, coaching, and performance opportunities are provided at no cost to the dancers.
